Blackheath has long been a magnet for London artists, with its World Heritage site at Greenwich, Goldsmiths College, University of London nearby, and some of the most diverse scenery from urban decay to the glorious spaces of the Heath, Greenwich Park and the River Thames.
Blackheath Art Society was launched in 1947 with Graham Sutherland as first President, and a bevy of distinguished artist and educators with links to Goldsmiths and Camberwell Schools of Art.Founder members included college principals John Mansbridge, Heber Matthews, Clive Gardiner and Leonard Daniels, Jean Cooke, Rowland Hilder, Graham Sutherland, Anthony Gross, and John Bratby were among early exhibitors.
Blackheath Art Society is a group of professional and semi professional artists working and living in the area.
The Society's exhibitions celebrate the work of our enthusiastic membership. We aim to enhance the reputation of a society which is at once historic and expanding.
We hang a representative selection of the members work and hang and catologue work which shows it to its best advantage. The vitality of the Society is nurtured by two or three exhibitions each year. Our Open Studios is also an annual event. We produce a regular newsletter and join in occasional sketching days, workshops and visits. A lively Committee is supported by active volunteer members. Forthcoming events are shown on the events pages. Membership information is on the contact page.
